COPY OF AN OLD MASTER

Copy after: Portrait of King Willem I (1772–1843), painted by court painter Charles Howard Hodges (1764–1837).

Introduction

Copying paintings by the Old Masters is a centuries-old tradition within the art of painting.

As a classically trained painter, I continue this tradition by creating high-quality, hand-painted copies based on historical techniques. These works are not reproductions, but carefully executed reinterpretations in which material, brushwork and structure play a central role.

A copy may arise from admiration for a masterpiece, or from the desire to give a painting with personal meaning a new place in one’s life.

Why commission a copy of an old master?

A hand-painted copy has a completely different presence than a reproduction or print.

Through the use of real paint, visible brushwork and classical techniques, the painting gains an authentic material quality that comes close to the original.

A copy of an Old Master can serve, for example, as:

  • a unique artwork for your interior
  • a study piece for lovers of classical painting
  • a tribute to a favourite artist

Historical techniques

In creating these works, I follow classical painting methods as closely as possible, with a layered build-up of paint and the use of traditional pigments.

My background as a teacher of classical painting techniques at Atelier Sint Lucas in The Hague plays an important role in this process.

Format and execution

The painting can be executed:

  • at the original size
  • in a custom format
  • on panel or canvas

Personal consultation

Because every painting and every wish is different, we discuss the possibilities, format and desired execution in advance.
