RATH - Rock 'n roll Art collective The Hague takes off with the Rath Pack number one

Pop City Number One
The Hague has been "Pop Town Number One" since the 1960s. Familiar names like Golden Earrings, Shocking Blue, The Motions and Q65 are known to everyone. But even 60 years later, The Hague is still Pop Town Number One. In short The Hague is rock 'n roll and has been breathing rock 'n roll out of all its pores for years!

Not just the musicians
Clé Moormann, one of Victor Hoefnagels' students, had the idea to organize an exhibition with rock 'n roll as the theme, together with a number of other artists from The Hague. He invited Patricia Steur (back in the city!), Arjan van Gent, Victor Hoefnagels and artist couple Marcello&Els. The birth of the Rath Pack number one was a fact!

Exhibition The Hague May 2024
The exhibition RATH PACK NUMBER ONE will start on May 3 at Galerie Lisbon on Denneweg 24 in The Hague and will end with a finissage on Sunday, May 12. The opening on May 3 is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with an official moment at 5:00 p.m. During the opening, Arie Spaans and Jan den Boer will play live music.

How wonderful to see my portrait of the phenomenal singer Lynn Davis on vinyl.

How awesome is this 😃! Singer, musician and backing vocalist for the Rolling Stones (since 1989), Bernard Fowler poses with my portrait of him and sent me this amazing photo.

On this note, I especially want to thank photographer Dana Frank who is a long time friend of Bernard and made the contact for me!

After years of painting, writing, having texts edited and designing my Cat book, the time has come. The first proof copy has been printed and now the possibilities of publishing it are being explored. To be continued!

I am proud to present to you this video about my portrait of David Bowie and Ava Cherry. I have had a lot of contact with Ava recently and that has resulted in this video. Without her advice, feedback and help in picking the images it would never have turned out so beautifully. It is truly a result of our collaboration!

We chose Ava's version of the beautiful song "Sweet thing" that still gives me goosebumps. Ava was seventeen when it was recorded. Later the song was sung by David himself and appeared on the 1974 album Diamond Dogs.

Just back from NY where I attended the David Bowie World Fan Convention 2023. What an experience to meet Carlos Alomar, Robin Clark, Lea Lórien, Carmine Rojas and Ava Cherry, among others! Unforgettable time!

My latest project is an homage to The Rolling Stones. The song "Start me up" was the first single I purchased as a 12-year-old. Sweet memories!

Article written by Sandra Don in the AD of Friday, May 19, 2023 regarding my new "Vermeer" that will now hopefully get a permanent home in the Vermeer Center in Delft. It is the same place where the St. Luke's Guild used to be located. Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) twice waved the scepter there. arjanvermeer.pdf

After a long wait, I may finally announce that I am one of the twelve professional artists selected for the television program "the New Vermeer". In the third episode "Venus, Jupiter and Mercury" you can see how Adriaan and I did it. Come see that! Feb. 26 at 8:30 p.m. on NPO1

Amid Vermeer experts Pieter Roelofs (Rijksmuseum) and Abbie Vandivere (Mauritshuis). They were also the judges of the television broadcast.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

For several years, I have been working with well-known musicians and, as a result, interesting collaborations have emerged. The inspiration for these video homages come from the romantic idea known as "Gesamtkunstwerk" or "Universal work of art." In this particular case, photography, video, portraits and music are used. Created out of complete and abundant admiration for these musicians, these homages are intended for non-commercial and informational purposes with educational content to inspire people around the world.

My Wall of fame

Famous mostly American musicians posing with my work in their studio. The photos include Carlos Alomar (Bowie's musical director and guitarist, among others) and his wife, singer Robin Clark (Bowie, Simple Minds, etc.), Sting, Carmine Rojas (David Bowie's bassist on the Serious Moonlight Tour in 1983 and the Glass Spider Tour in 1987), Alan Childs (David Bowie's drummer on the Glass Spider Tour in 1987), Simon Westbrook (singer on A Bowie Celebration, etc.), Bruce Wallace (lighting director at Sesame Street, manager, artist developer, choreographer), Paulette McWilliams (singer with Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross), Erik Hargrove (drummer with James Brown and Bootsy Collins) and Mike Garson (Bowie's piano man from 1972 - 2004). I am currently working on my book 'On the wings of my time - The Wall of Fame and other stories' about all the experiences surrounding these inspiring encounters and experiences!

exhibitions

In collaboration with owner Ofran Badakhshani of wijnbardefilosoof.eu in Molenstraat 16 in The Hague there is currently an exhibition of my landscapes. These so-called 'Lockdown Landscapes' were previously on display in Galerie Schippers, but this exhibition was difficult to visit because of the lockdowns. Now that the Corona measures hardly apply anymore, it is now possible to visit my works without an appointment! The oil paintings, watercolors and mixed media works are for sale and owner Ofran will be happy to talk to you. It is also possible to meet with me personally, because I live in the same street. Please feel free to contact or make an appointment in the wine bar itself where you can admire the works while enjoying a good glass of wine and delicious snacks from the land of Rumi and Zarathustra. The exhibit will be permanent. The wine bar is open daily from 15.00.

About the artist

Arjan van Gent was born on June 3, 1970 in Delft and was educated at the Royal Academy of The Hague and the Amsterdam School of the Arts. His work can be found in both private (including private collection Sting, Romy Haag, Paulette McWilliams, the Johan Cruyff family and David Bowie alumni Mike Garson, Carmine Rojas, Gerry Leonard, Earl Slick, Carlos Alomar and Alan Childs) and museum collections (including Gerard Revemuseum in Amsterdam and Swaensteyn museum in Voorburg) and can be seen regularly at Pulchri Studio in The Hague. In 2016 he won the Audience Award at the Summer Salon in the same gallery. In addition, his work has been shown in, among others, Galerie Pictura, Morren Galleries, Maya Wildevuur, Kunstzaal van Heijningen and at the Dutch Portrait Prize.
He was also seen in the well-known television program “Sterren op het Doek” in 2012.
Besides painting itself, his passion is teaching and he teaches Classical Drawing and Painting Techniques at his own School of Figurative Arts, Ateliersintlucas.nl
In addition to portraits and cats (commissioned or otherwise), still lifes and landscapes mainly everyday scenes (genre) are the subject of his oil paintings, watercolors and drawings. Intimacy and the role of light in this are striking features of his approach. His classic illusionistic painting style is closely linked to our rich Dutch tradition.
